Lien

A monetary claim against property as security for a debt

A lien does not give possession — it gives the right to force a sale if the debt is not paid. Liens are voluntary (a mortgage) or involuntary (taxes, a judgment), and general (against all of a debtor’s property) or specific (against one parcel).

How the exam asks about it

Priority is the recurring subject: property tax liens come first regardless of date, and the rest generally rank first in time, first in right by recording date.
