Pledging property as security without giving up possession of it
It is what makes a mortgage useful: the borrower keeps living in the house while the lender holds a claim against it. Pawning something is the opposite arrangement — there, possession moves.
How the exam asks about it
A vocabulary item almost every time. Recognize it as "pledged but still occupied".
